Can You See Through The FOG?

by Cas Willow on [edit]

Emotional Blackmail

"Lost in the Fog

How do so many smart, capable, people find themselves groping to understand behaviour that seems so obvious? One Key reason is that our blackmailers make it nearly impossible to see how they're manipulating us, at first, because they lay down a thick fog that obscures their actions. We'd fight back if we could, but they ensure the we literally can't see what is happening to us. I use fog both as a metaphor for the confusion blackmailers create in us and as a lens for burning it off.

FOG is shorthand way of referring to Fear, Obligation and Guilt, the blackmailers' tools of the trade. They pump an engulfing FOG into their relationships, ensuring that we will feel afraid to cross them, obligated to give them their way and terribly guilty if we don't.

Because it's so tough to cut through this FOG to recognize emotional blackmail when it's happening to you – or even in retrospect – I've devised the following checklist to help you determine if you are a blackmailer's target:

Do important people in your life:

  •  Threaten to make your life difficult if you don't do what the want?

  •  Constantly threaten to end the relationship if you don't do what they want?

  •  Tell you or imply that they will neglect, hurt themselves or become depressed if you don't do what they want?

  •  Always want more, no matter how much you give?

  •  Regularly assume you will give in to them?

  •  Regularly ignore or discount your feelings and wants?

  •  Make lavish promises that are contingent on your behaviour and then rarely keep them?

  •  Consistently label you as selfish, bad, greedy, unfeeling or uncaring when you don't give in to them?

  •  Shower you with approval when you give in to them and take it away when you don't?

  •  Use money as a weapon to get their way?

If you answered "yes' to even one of these questions, you are being emotionally blackmailed. But I want to assure you that there are many changes you can put into practice  immediately to improve your situation and the way you feel."

Exact taken from "Emotional Blackmail"  by Dr. Susan Forward with Donna Frazier.

The above information is an extract from a book that I have been recommending to my clients and giving them strategies how to deal with the FOG for years, it is truly amazing how many people answer "yes' to many of these questions and accept it as the norm, you can change and you can change the way people treat you, you are in control.

Day Dreaming

Research over the years has show that we all have the inclination to daydream every day on an average of 80-120 minutes a day. When people day dream their mind goes into an altered state of consciousness, just slightly and gently even though you are awake. You are truly awake yet feel like you are in a different space. A space that feels disconnected to the reality of the world you may be in at the time in a superior way. Remember as a child we would play and make believe that the world was a different place perhaps filled with fairies and heroes. As we grow up we tend to loose such fantasies because it’s often deemed as childlike. So we use a day dream to visit that fantasy world and enjoy the moments in time in a natural and empowering way. Often we love that moment of peace and fantasy , so much so, when the time to come back to reality is called the mind can have a sense of resistance. Hypnotherapy can help you develop the art of daydreaming into something active and profound that can help you relax and bring calmness both to the mind and the body.

Active Lucid Dreams

I want to talk to you also about Lucid dreams. We all have them and experience something different from each and every one. You may be in a dream enjoying every moment or not then realising that you are dreaming whilst you are in the dream. The experience can feel very strange and become a shock to the dreamer. When this process happens the body and mind naturally wake up and take themselves out of that experience even if they didn’t want to at the time. Some dreamers have refined this process and developed the ability to actually remain in that lucid dream. This is a wonderful skill to learn if you are interested in what you can do within those dreams. When you have mastered such a skill which can easily be accomplished with your therapist you can become actively involved in your dreams, controlling and making decisions bringing about changes and improving your general well being. You can even work the dream to help solve problems. Recently I assisted a young girl to work her dream to find something near and dear to her that she had lost many years ago. The dream took an interesting turn when she was able to retrace her steps in a safe and secure manner without being persuaded to wake up. The power of the mind is one that creates the thought !!!

Exciting yet empowering.

There are many different stages of ‘Change’ which may feel indifferent and perhaps unusual. That’s okay, it’s all part of the transition process. Just remember ‘change sometimes becomes fearful’ as we explore the unknown of both the conscious and the unconscious. Sometimes we need to focus on our own instincts and what actually drives us to where we choose to be our lives today.

Trust thyself’    We welcome ‘Change’ as our best friend’
Now let us talk about you! Have you ever been asked this Question either by your family, friends or even by yourself? “What do I want to change in my life?” Sometimes we muddle our way through each day, sweating great tears, emotions and stressors hoping for some type of recognition or a sense of purpose and / or achievement and for What? and from Whom? One might ask. We gradually come to a time in our life whether it be sooner or later when we do actually ask, “What do I want to change in your life?” which then rolls into the secondary question and “How did I get here?”.
Spend some time in the next 24 hours writing your answers down. Be as honest as you can and try not to leave anything out, include both negative and positive findings. Now, upon completion of that task, “What have you learnt”? If you are truly happy with everything in your life then ‘self checking’ of current status is always a helpful task which simply gives you a great sense of validation. If you are not truly happy in your life then our new found friend ‘Change’ is entering your space, upon invite of course.
Remember the old Saying I am sure you have heard this from many different sources ‘If you continue to do what you have always done, you will continue to achieve the same results’, something has to change in your life ‘NOW” in order to grow and develop into the person you truly desire. Sometimes seeking assistance can be most empowering and can bring about the change you seek.
Living each day as you dreamt it to be can be most satisfying and rewarding. Take the courage to search for meaning in your life ‘TODAY” Invite ‘CHANGE’.

SunSplit

It is very real and alive in our society today. !!

Anorexia Nervosa is but one; of a lot of deadly eating disorders which can be unnoticed until the extremities of the symptoms ‘take hold’ within the person. Many people with Anorexia Nervosa hide away and disguise themselves from society and their loving families. Both men and women of all ages can suffer from Anorexia Nervosa. Age is not necessary a heightened statistic although common in young teens; as many people only seek out help when perhaps they can no longer function in a healthy way in true reality. People with Anorexia Nervosa have extreme concerns about their weight, struggling to live with each day trying not to gain any solid mass. Everyday their emotions became more and more emerged into a world that differs from many. Vast amounts of time is spent trying not to  ‘put on weight’ which takes over the person’s life. People with Anorexia Nervosa can go to deliberate measures to maintain a low body weight. Excessive exercise can contribute to extreme weight loss coupled with very little food intake.

Although food has a strong focus for the person with Anorexia Nervosa, it is the intense emotions and / or emotional difficulties that take over the person on both levels of consciousness. There are many different reasons and triggers why people suffer from Anorexia Nervosa, the exploration of those triggers and reasons are explored in a holistic manner which can be your journey back. ‘Seeking help’ is the first decision to change your life in some way, shape or form.  Seeing a therapist can be scary and fearful yet supportive and helpful. Beginning a healing journey towards ‘self recovery’ from Anorexia Nervosa is ‘SO POSSIBLE’, ‘SO REAL’; it is something that can be done, can be achieved.! The journey back is not easy but life was never a ‘dress rehearsal’, we live each day as the real thing, good or bad, up and down. Life, time goes on, hour by hour, minute by minute, day by day. Time never stops. The process of recovery varies in length for each individual however with great courage, persistence and the right supports along the way, your life can be different. You can make it happen for you !
